Is a Professional Video CV Worth It?
Any job seeker should constantly question the return on the time they invest in various job search activities. “I could do this, but it is worth it?” This question is particularly relevant for a professional video CV.
Professionally shot video CVs are entering the job search mainstream. The market has been particularly candidate-led in recent years, which may have slowed the emergence somewhat (as candidates haven’t needed them). As smartphone camera specifications improve, the barriers to making a fantastic video CV have never been lower.
But, to return to the question: is a professional video CV worth the effort?
My view is simple. If there is a job that you are keen on, and if you feel comfortable in front of the camera, then there are a whole host of benefits. Of course, a video CV should accompany a traditional CV and cover letter (it won’t replace them yet). Still, it offers a compelling snapshot that may secure that crucial first interview.
Benefits of a video CV
Personality-driven visual format. A professional video CV offers something totally different. If a hiring manager is wavering on whether you deserve a first interview, this could be your make-or-break moment. If you ensure that your personality fits their culture and what you share is perfect for the role, you will likely create a compelling case.
Show passion and enthusiasm for the role. The mere fact that you are submitting a virtual CV shows that you are keen on the role. Don’t go overboard with the passion and hyperbole in the video CV itself. Keep it factual, tell the stories that matter and share why you want the job. Do not say, “I really want the job.” Don’t be desperate.
Highlights your communication skills. When a hiring manager reads a cover letter and CV, they have no idea how you communicate in real life. Professional writers sometimes write CVs, so there is a disconnect when candidates turn up to an interview and can’t string two words together. If you are a solid communicator, a professional video CV is for you.
Video creates curiosity
Take advantage of the curiosity factor. Hiring managers do not expect to receive a video CV. While the quality of some they have received will likely be poor, the curiosity factor is still there. They will probably click to view it. If it is clear that the quality and presentation is impressive, they will almost certainly watch until the end.
Gives you control over the message. While it should naturally reflect who you are, you would be foolish not to compose a rough script. Unless it is a one-off video embedded in certain application portals (they are challenging), you can also re-record it until you are happy with the result. Gaining control over that first impression is vital.
Of course, there is the insidious role of unconscious bias and outright discrimination to consider. Some people advise against video CVs, but you will meet the hiring managers at the interview anyway, so any biases may simply surface later on.
Forget the negatives. If it is your dream role and you want to make every effort you can, a well-thought-out and professional video CV could make the difference.
